“It all began in Iraq, during the height of the ISIS refugee crisis.

— Tim Buxton, Founder & Chief Welcomer

“Because We All Belong”

In 2014, the seeds for You Belong's timely beginning were sown when Tim and Sarah Buxton moved to Northern Iraq to lead a humanitarian mission. Their arrival coincided with a harrowing global crisis: the ISIS invasion of Iraq on June 9, forcing 2 million people to seek refuge on the doorstep of their new home in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region.

For over three years, the Buxtons partnered with local community leaders to provide housing, education, medical care, trauma counselling, and vocational training to thousands of Iraqi and Syrian refugees and internally displaced families.

Upon their return to Australia in 2018, the Buxton’s were struck by the integration challenges faced by refugees. Just a few hours drive away, Tim discovered that in Toowoomba alone, a rapid resettlement of over 2,000 refugees from Iraq and Syria had taken place, sparking the creation of You Belong Australia. Established with tax-deductible (DGR) charity status (PBI) by the Australian Commission for Not-for-profts, You Belong is driven by the bold vision to see “Waymakers* Thriving in Inclusive Communities”.

You Belong envisions a future where Waymakers thrive in inclusive Australian communities. The organisation is energetically committed to fostering a culture of welcome and generosity towards Waymakers, celebrating diversity, and championing opportunities for volunteer engagement.

These volunteers are central to championing Waymakers and empowering their integration, success and sense of belonging within their new local communities.

You Belong is driven by the bold vision to see “Waymakers Thriving in Inclusive Communities”.

You Belong is incredibly excited about the launch of the CRISP program and its potential to revolutionise refugee settlement in Australia through private sponsorship. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission at You Belong, as it unlocks the immense potential of local Australian communities to positively impact the lives of refugees, our Waymakers. We're dedicated to the success of CRISP, seeing it as a crucial way to mobilize and equip Australians to offer a welcoming and empowering hand to Waymakers. Our enthusiasm is driven by our vision to create thriving, inclusive communities where everyone has the chance to succeed and feel truly at home.

In light of growing global refugee figures now hovering at approximately 120 million displaced peoples, and tragically fuelled by ongoing conflicts and the alarming prediction of large scale climate displacement — You Belong has sights set to ambitiously expand its horizons. We recognise that most displaced persons are sheltered by the least developed countries, which are often stretched thin in resources. And so, with the launch of You Belong as a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit in the USA, we’re now forging strong global partnerships and initiatives where the need is greatest.

This growing mission is driven by a belief that everyone, especially nations in positions of power, have a responsibility and the unique opportunity to lead the way in championing Waymakers, because we all belong and deserve an equal opportunity to thrive!

*Refugees are Waymakers, including asylum seekers, internally displaced and all culturally and linguistically diverse migrants.

Our Team

  • Kinda Flaha

    Director of Engagement

Kinda Flaha is an integral part of You Belong and our dynamic leader engagement in both Toowoomba and further afield. Known for her passion for community development and refugee empowerment. Her journey is a source of inspiration all who meet her.

From a young age in Syria, Kinda's love for different cultures and languages led her to study English as a second language. She pursued this passion further, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in English Literature and Arts. Kinda's academic background laid the foundation for her career as an educator, where she taught English to children and adults, enriching their lives through language.

Her role as an educator extended beyond the classroom. In Syria, Kinda coordinated language programs and community service initiatives, leading a team at a local institute teaching English, Russian, and Arabic. Her team's social impact was tangible, involving projects like painting primary school walls, renovating a local library garden, and running social media campaigns to foster hope and change within Syria.

However, the escalating Syrian Civil War brought increasing danger to her hometown, forcing Kinda and her young family to seek refuge in Iraq. Their journey eventually led them to Australia, where they were granted a humanitarian visa. This new chapter in Australia has been marked by significant milestones — notably, when Kinda, Yamin (husband) and Ebrahim (son) became Australian citizens on January 26, 2023.

Kinda continues to pursue her dreams, including her passion for travel, drawing, writing poetry, and cooking. This love for cooking has blossomed into a successful venture — “Kinda's Kitchen”, a catering business specialising in delicious and nutritious Middle Eastern cuisine.

Kinda’s refugee lived experience is invaluable to You Belong, ensuring that our organisational and programmatic impact is grounded in empathy and authenticity. Her contributions are not just vital to our success; they are a testament to the power of hope and the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity.
