A Yezidi man’s response to COVID19

Meet Dakhil.

A former refugee from Iraq.

He’s been in Australia for 2 years.

He’s a respected leader among Toowoomba’s Yezidi people.

He’s lived through chaos in his homeland, and so appreciates the safety and enforcement of rules in Australia to keep order and safety.

Dakhil works at the local police station washing policing vehicles 4 days a week. He made a veggie garden at a local school and likes to keep busy helping the community and supporting newly arrived Yezidis in their transition to life in Aus.

We recently asked Dakhil his thoughts about how the Yezidi community is coping with the COVID19 pandemic…

“As a Yezidi community, we are spending our time at home according to the instructions issued by the local government, and do not leave our houses except for essential things.

The Yezidi community are staying connected through social media communications and phone calls so that we are not gathering more than 2 people together.

We suffer a lot when we hear about the ill health or fatality of anyone with COVID19 virus in all regions of our beautiful continent of Australia.

We pray to God that he will heal the infected people and restore life to normal so that we can rejoice and dance together, to have a thousand greetings with our friends and families, and to use our hands to build a kind and tolerant society.”
