Year 5’s support Move2Belong

On 7 June, Year 5 students at King’s Christian College spent the first part of their school day on the move, all in the name of a good cause.

You Belong is a Gold Coast-based charity that helps empower and equip refugees with a range of life skills and resources. Tim and Sarah Buxton founded the charity after spending four years in Iraq during the height of the ISIS crisis where they helped thousands of Iraq and Syrian refugees. Their amazing programs, events and workshops help many refugees to integrate and thrive in Australia.

"The global refugee crisis is the greatest humanitarian disaster since World War 2, with more than three times the population of Australia currently displaced around the world. "

- Tim Buxton, You Belong Founder

Every June, You Belong seeks support for its work through its biggest annual fundraising campaign Move2Belong, which coincides with World Refugee Day on June 20. Move2Belong encourages people to choose a migration route that a refugee would travel, and cover that distance during June. Whether it's surfing, walking, skating, running, cycling, swimming, or another activity, anyone can set themselves a move challenge and help the important work of You Belong.

Ultra-marathon runner, Jordan Chenery, set himself the remarkable Move2Belong challenge to run 33 marathons in 33 days! Jordan had visited Syria and was touched by the kindness of its people and now wants to draw attention to the plight of those fleeing the country, and other war-torn regions around the world. He hopes his mammoth marathon efforts will raise awareness and financial support for You Belong's important work with refugees.

"When you see what a refugee does to move to a new location, you really start to appreciate how far people go to create a new life for themselves. I've committed to doing a marathon every day in June – but I’m not running to save my life or move to a different place – I’m just running to create awareness to what goes on around the world."

- Jordan Chenery

Year 5 students ran with Jordan as he completed his seventh marathon at King's on Tuesday, and enjoyed the opportunity to ask him a number of questions about his Move2Belong motivations. The inspirational story was covered by Channels 7 : https://fb.watch/dvVGgzXuO9/

Thanks Year 5 class for helping to get the word out!
